He soon learned to play various instruments—such as drums, keyboards and guitar—and soon found work as a radio deejay before becoming known as one of New York City’s premier DJs by spinning records at small clubs around town. It wasn’t long before he began producing mixtapes that were in high demand among other local DJs, who would often hire him for their own events after hearing his mixes first-hand. DJ Camilo has been spinning records since he was 16 years old and has played at some of the biggest festivals in America and Europe, including Lollapalooza and Glastonbury. He’s also performed for some of the biggest names in music: Jay Z, Beyonce, Rihanna–you name it!

Camilo grew up in the suburbs of Miami and started playing music when he was 12 years old. He’d mix tapes with his friends on tape decks, before the internet made it possible to share music digitally. “When people would come over and hear something they liked, you would have to give them the tape,” Camilo explains.

“I was always interested in music,” he continues. “I remember going out partying with my parents when I was little and hearing different kinds of Latin music.”

The genre has been around since the late 1970s when disco was dying out and house music was just getting started. It’s a subgenre of electronic music that has many subgenres within it: techno, trance, progressive house–the list goes on!

He played records for people who were there to dance and have a good time, not listen to carefully curated playlists or talk about how much they love his music taste. That said, he still had some ideas about what would work best: “I used to do mixes with friends using tape decks,” he says. “We’d take two tapes each and mix them together.” This was before CDs were common (and even before MP3s). They’d cut up songs into short segments so that they could swap out one song after another without having any gaps between tracks–it was an effective way of keeping everyone dancing all night long!
