There are many ways to become a member of the Athens Ohio Ham Radio Club. The first step is to find out more about the hobby. Ham radio is a hobby in which radio operators communicate using a continuous wave. This means that the signals are audible in noisy conditions.

In an emergency, amateur radio is an important line of communication. It can be used during plane crashes, natural disasters, and civil unrest. Amateur radio is especially useful in areas with no cellular service. A simple blackout could leave thousands of people without communication.
